What I Did
Work
This past Tuesday I finally came clean to my manager about some long-running cultural and organizational issues, and how the disclarity on my output’s perception is impacting my ability to work effectively (as well as my mental health). The response was…mixed, tbh. He acknowledged some of them, downplayed others, and didn’t really seem to understand why yet others were even a problem. Still, though, he agreed to the action items I asked for, so I’m cautiously hopeful for improvement there.
Again - more to say there, but it’s probably prudent to limit my public statements on the matter. I really do hope to see some improvement - although I’m now at a position where I’d have a clear conscience about walking away (if nothing improves) in the knowledge that I’d done everything I could to build a positive working relationship, I still hope that the situation improves.
Personal
- The next weekend after the previous post, I took my wife to a Drifting Course as a 40th Birthday gift. She had a great time, and both of us really enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect away from home and the everyday.
- Unfortunately my employer suffered a significant security incident over that weekend, so the following few weeks were pretty manic. For obvious reasons, I’m not going to say more about that other than to link to the official post.
- I had a few dates (including one at a Burlesque show) with partners existing and new in the following weeks.
- Hosted a screening of the leaked Avatar movie with some friends.
- Over the weekend of the 1-3 May, my wife and I met up (she’d been in New York) in Florida for “Relationship Recess”, a Poly Community event run by Normalizing Non-Monogamy and co-hosted by Multiamory. I was a little wary - forced, artificial “community” often leaves me feeling uncomfortable - but the event was actually a lot of fun! Lots of great conversations and connections.
- Hosted another Poly Board Games event yesterday. Incredibly high payoff in terms of “living your values” (being a community organizer) per unit of effort (arranging a Partiful event and making the booking is, like, 10 minutes?) - I should do this more often.
- This evening, I extended my Jellyfin Library Count Metrics Exporter to also export playtime per-user and -show/-genre. Untested as yet, I’m waiting on the build as I write this!
What I’ll Do
Work
…hopefully, have some clearer goals and expectations, as well as some supported wins in advance of my next performance review
Personal
Actually no major plans or events in the upcoming couple weeks, which is a blessed relief. I have a hell of a backlog of tasks I need to get around to - the first (8,000) mile service on my car, chasing up Barclays to let me transfer the proceeds from the sale of Mum’s house to my US account, responding to some questions from the Inland Revenue about the tax on said house’s proceeds. Plus I finally proxied up my first cEDH deck and have been goldfishing some games, and I want to get around to finishing Factorio. Plus getting another D&D session scheduled, and arranging the Avatar pre-release, and finishing “Crafting Interpreters”, and and…One Thing At A Time!
